Re: Spinner baits
Chico's are very good; Franglais Fishing don't do bad ones for a bit less money. Alternatively Jennifields which are nice and cheap

Re: Spinner baits
spinnerbaits are a good lure, I've had success with'em, apart from the canal, they don't seem to be working there.
I've always used LURE A PIKE for my spinnerbaits, give Roy a call as he can do em in various patterns and styles.....

Re: Spinner baits
As Guy said, Chico's MM baits are very good, as are Drifter Grinders if you can find them.
My all time favourite spinnerbait is this one though

I got hold of a few from GAC a few months back, had loads in stock, different colours and weights, not had a look for them since though...

Re: Spinner baits
The MM spinnerbaits are big but then they are meant to be a big fish bait.
"I've always used LURE A PIKE for my spinnerbaits, give Roy a call as he can do em in various patterns and styles....." so how long have you been using spinnerbaits for Mr Makk?

Re: Spinner baits
Im not, well wasnt a big spinnerbait fan, having used a few from the likes of fox ace etc
then one day i had an epiphany with the things. The one that did the business was a huey from chico
I bought a few after that. If you want a bait that is huge and seems even bigger when your reeling it in (my god do they thump) then buy a couple of muskiemachinery ones.
If you want farty little bendy things then look elsewhere.
when it comes to spending my money ill buy the best i can

Re: Spinner baits
Ordered a MM huey in perch from Chico as I was ordering a few other bits from him as well. Will pick up a couple of Da Bush when my local shop has them back in stock.

Re: Spinner baits
Look past all the glitzy bits and check the strength, bend and gape of the primary hook on a spinnerbait. Make sure it's got a good broad gape. Other than that make sure the wire is a decent gauge. Everything else on a bait can be tweaked and tuned.

Re: Spinner baits
I'd second Andrew's comments above. Avoid anything less than an ounce for starters and try to get something designed with pike in mind, not large mouth bass! Unfortunately a lot of spinnerbaits being sold in the UK are too small and lack the strength to do the job (or do it for very long). I recall those Reed Runner spinner baits of about 1/2 ounce that I first started to use about ???? years ago - the silicon skirt used to get bitten off almost immediately, the hooks would snap and pike would clamp the things flat and hence, missed takes... Barry's Buzzer was better and the Lindy ones I had from Lushy were OK. Albeit they all used a rubber or silicon colar for the skirt, which is something to avoid as pike bite straight through them. You want a plastic cable tie holding the skirt on. Lumby used to sell his own spinner baits, they were probably the best I have seen from someone in the UK. Sadly he no make them anymore... So, these days, my top two recommendations are ERC Grinders and Rad Dogs (Ruff Tackle). Also, M&G's, Stump Hawgs and Hot Heads (Shumway) mounted with mag grubs or shads are very good. Most U.S. online musky/pike retailers stock these lures.
Spinnerbaits... probably the most versatile lure out there and super effective too. I htink I have probably caught more pike on spinner baits than any other lure type over the years. Good for perch as well and I have had quite a few zander on them. Even caught a tench on one once - hooked in the gob I'd add. Bit of a Twilight Zone capture that one!!!!

Er, just bend the hook point out of line. No more missed takes or at least very few.
Agree on the versatility of Spinnerbaits, if Barrie's diaries get published you will then be able to see how effective they were in Barrie's hands.

Re: Spinner baits
Dave Lumb used to sell the hot heads... brilliant lure to use against structure where you want to helicopter a bait down the side of it. I've lost count of the number of fish I've had like that.
Sorry Colin. Barrie, of course it is. Very remiss of me
Not so sure about bending the hookpoint out was ever much of a solution. It was the narrow guage of wire that was the problem, albeit with Barrie's Buzzer that was less of a problem as at least they were made a lot better (thicker wire) than other spinnerbaits we were using at the time. I still have a few actually.

Mine too - don't know why you sold it to me
The other two I got from you are good too - can't remember their name though, even though Steve D Identified them at the time. These are the only 3 I have, so I can't compare to any others - I keep meaning to get a MM or 2 from Chico too, but I'm doing ever so well at not buying lures - don't want to fall off the wagon
